André Carstens

As my tenure in Bangladesh draws to a close and I prepare to embark on a new diplomatic assignment, my heart is filled with gratitude and cherished memories. Serving as the highest representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh – what a beautiful name, by the way – has been profoundly meaningful: professionally, personally, and yes, even athletically, thanks to the many unforgettable mornings spent on Bangladesh’s golf courses.

Looking back, the past ten months have felt like a well-paced round of golf: sometimes strategic, often requiring precision, but always enriched by nature, camaraderie, and a shared sense of purpose in work and in life. From the Tiger fairways to the Golf of Bengal, from fancy startups to the marble corridors of ministries, my mission remained straight: to widen and deepen the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and the Netherlands.

Diplomatic Achievements: Strengthening the Delta Bond

As two nations formed by river deltas, our connection extends far beyond trade or treaties: we share a profound commitment to resilience. Supporting the implementation of the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 is a cornerstone of our bond. This long-term strategy, inspired by our water-management expertise, will serve as a guide for Bangladesh toward a climate-resilient future.

I remember crossing one of the mighty rivers – with my bicycle on a wooden boat – watching the tidal waters. Then I realized how close we are. Our cooperation on river erosion, flood management and salinity control is not just technical; this is in both of our genes. Reviving water-drainage canals, threatened by congestion, is another key chapter. Our philosophy of “living with water” found resonance here. Therefore, I leave hopeful that Dhaka will rediscover its aquatic identity.
